It's hard enough for a rookie QB in the NFL, but with Dak Prescott and Carson Wentz killing it, the expectations on Jared Goff are even higher than normal ... so says Goff's dad.

We spoke with Jerry Goff who tells us he's super excited to watch Jared's 1st start against the Dolphins this weekend ... because Jared's been working his ass off to get to this point.

As for the other rookies, Dak and Carson are a combined 13-5 -- and Jerry says, "All of [Jared's] buddies are out there doing their thing. There's gonna be some expectations, no doubt."

Andre Ward has a great big NOT SO FAST for anyone who thinks UFC guys can't hang with pro boxers ... saying he actually sparred with Nick and Nate Diaz, and the dudes can throw hands ... FOR REAL.

Ward's in Vegas getting ready for his PPV throwdown with Sergey Kovalev on Saturday and took a little time to talk to TMZ Sports before the two lock horns.

Of course, we asked him who he'd pick in a mega-fight between Conor and Floyd ... and while he made it clear Floyd has the edge in a boxing ring, he told us he knows FIRSTHAND how hard UFC guys can hit.

"I spar with Nick and Nate Diaz ... those boys know what they're doing, they can throw their hands."

Get this ... Ward also says he'd like to see a truce in the whole MMA vs boxing war.

Chael Sonnen just gave Jon Jones fans a classic good news/bad news situation ...

Good news? Jones is returning to the mat as part of Chael's Submission Underground event next month ... an all-grappling combat contest Jones is actually allowed to compete in, despite his yearlong drug suspension.

Bad news? Jon is up against his old UFC foe -- and former Olympic wrestler -- Dan Henderson ... during a bout on FloGrappling.com which according to Sonnen could mean Jones seriously gets embarrassed in the all-grappling format.

The legendary Cowboys head coach says he offered up his opinion to Jerry -- and was pretty strong about if Dak Prescott should stay under center when Tony Romo was cleared to play.

Switzer was super candid about his conversation with JJ when he spoke with TMZ Sports -- and praised Jones for putting together a 2016 squad that's the most exciting team he's seen in 20 years.

Turns out, the UCLA vs. USC game isn't the biggest thing going on in Jim Mora's life this week -- he just officially filed for divorce from his wife of 24 years ... TMZ Sports has learned.

Jim and Shannon Mora announced they had separated back in June -- but now, Jim has filed documents to end the marriage once and for all.

In court docs obtained by TMZ Sports, Mora cites irreconcilable differences.

The couple has 4 kids together -- including 2 minor children. He's asking for joint custody. He also checked the box to pay spousal support and his wife's attorney's fees. All signs of a pretty amicable split.

FYI, Mora signed a contract extension with UCLA earlier this year to keep him through 2021. He reportedly made $3.5 MILLION in 2016 alone.
