Mercy Miller -- rap legend Master P's son -- is gearing up for his second season at Houston ... and Cougars legend Otis Birdsong is expecting BIG things from the sophomore -- telling TMZ Sports, "He's already something special."

We caught up with the former All-American out at LAX ... and he explained Mercy paid his dues absorbing information from head coach Kelvin Sampson last year, and is now better because of it.

"In coach Sampson's system and culture, you got to wait your turn," he said. "He had to learn the system, learn the culture. He's tougher, he wants to be there, he wants to compete for a starting job."

Travis Kelce shed a few pounds at training camp already ... 'cause he went from flowing locks back to his normal shaved head for the upcoming season!

The Kansas City Chiefs official Instagram account shared a pic of Travis cracking a big smile on Sunday ... captioning the post, "Fresh cut Trav 😮‍💨."

We caught up with MJF -- who plays Sandler's son in the sequel to the 1996 classic -- out in New York City earlier this week ... and he described it as a dream to work alongside the Sandman.

"He's really like a father to me at this point," the wrestler said. "I grew up absolutely looking up to him and idolizing him as a kid."

Patrick Mahomes Sr. just got a judge's permission to watch his Chiefs superstar son play in Kansas City's first preseason game next month.

According to court records, obtained by TMZ Sports, Patrick Mahomes' father requested on July 17 to be able to attend the Aug. 9 K.C. vs. Arizona road tilt at State Farm Stadium. On July 22, a Smith County, Texas judge gave him the green light.

Mahomes Sr. said he'll be gone for the trip from Aug. 8 through Aug. 10 -- and will be staying at a Glendale-area hotel throughout. He vowed to follow the conditions of his probation while away ... as well as submit to a urinalysis test after returning to Texas on Aug. 11.
